Where’s The Pandora At?
Some very interesting music stories up in the bitch.
- First off: Hypebot.com (yeah, it IS a horrible name) posted the Top 15, in popularity NOT quality, Music Sites on the web. This is according to Comscore Media Metrix and the original report can be found HERE. Here’s the list:
- AOL Music (28,634,778)
- MySpace Music (27,423,200)
- Yahoo Music (20,578,092)
- MTV Networks Music (18,543,442)
- ArtistDirect Network (12,193,996)
- MSN Music (7,352,016)
- Jango Music Network (6,921,809)
- Universal Music Group (6,240,440)
- Imeem (6,162,165)
- Project Playlist (6,043,186)
- Rhapsody (6,014,385)
- Sony Music (3,900,618)
- Lyricsmode (3,804,775)
- Last.fm (3,740,479)
- Windows Music (3,054,952)
Those numbers, that list, is pretty shocking. I thought for sure enough people knew about, the pretty awesome, Pandora.com. The fact that AOL and Yahoo top the list is just proof that if you’ve got the numbers, the foot traffic or in the case the cyber-traffic, you’ll beat everyone else out regardless of quality (McfuckinDonalds). Great to see Last.FM make the list though.
- So there’s this pretty gigantic Hip-Hop festival in Minnesota called “Soundset”, which is sponsored by the local label Rhymesayers. And it’s sweet, will be sweet. Anyways what’s even sweeter is the fact that in tough times they’re offering FREE rides all day from the Mall of America and back. From its own mouth:
Here’s the deal, Soundset will offer a FREE shuttle service from Mall of America at the North Bus Loop (between Nordstroms and Sears) direct to Canterbury- dropping off at the entrance to the concert site. We will have 2 buses going every half hour starting at 10:00am. Please note, the pick up location is NOT the MOA transit center. Just look for the orange school buses that say Positive Connection & SOUNDSET. The FREE shuttles run every half hour, with the last bus departing Soundset Festival grounds at 9:00PM.
- Years after making lots of noise as an out-of-basement DJ and mashing “The White Album” with Jay-Z (which he obviously encouraged people to download/torrent), DANGER MOUSE is once again on that side of the fence with regards to his upcoming album and the label drama going with it. Due to “legal troubles with EMI”, Danger Mouse is forbidden to release his upcoming album on EMI, or anywhere else due to contractual obligations. So, he’s releasing a full album artwork, legit, case for the thing, except its got a blank CD inside and he’s encouraging people to torrent the album and burn it onto the CD-R. Statement from DangerCamp:
Danger Mouse’s new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.
The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’
Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.
Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night Of The Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is.
