Actually, that isn't Nolan's predicament if you've met a varied chunk of people who've seen this movie, or if you spend any time at all watching the numbers.

No not at all; in fact I even said "NOT liking something because its popular" is really lame. And I agree, the arguments about realism and believability are a joke. As far as Citizen Kane goes, well in the 1940s the film did terribly. Back then people didn't like films to stir the pot; Citizen Kane did so with its battles with RKO and all too familiar main character based on William Randoplh Hearst. Yes, it got lots of nominations, but they Acadamy was TINY back then; and it remains to this day a joke in many film fans' eyes. Straight from IMDB: "Despite all the publicity, the film was a box office flop and was quickly consigned to the RKO vaults. At 1941's Academy Awards the film was booed every time one of its nine nominations was announced. It was only re-released for the public in the mid-1950s". So it wasn't beloved in its time; and it wasn't considered the Greatest Ever until the late 50s/early 60s. Don't talk history if you don't know anything about it. Not trying to be a dick, I'm serious though.

No matter how grounded in realism TDK is, it's still a COMIC BOOK movie. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, is there a problem to actually like a movie that everybody else likes? I fond hancock to be an entertaining film, and yet the critics lauded it!

On a final note;
Citizen Kane was totally beloved in it's time, it was considered the greatest movie ever (and still is). What's not to say there weren't people who hated all the buzz it was getting - who hated it out of all the appreciation others would give it?

There's nothing really that ironic about doing a weak magic trick and having your audience tell you 'that's a weak magic trick' - which is basically Nolan's predicament. A good magic trick seduces you into suspending your disbelief. TDK (unlike the prestige, which I liked quite a bit) failed to seduce me into belief-suspension. It wasn't a terrible movie, but I honestly didn't like it very much. I walked out of the theater feeling puzzled about all the excessive praise.

Thankyou so much. A great read.

"At some restaurant booth somewhere, Chris Nolan and his brother are laughing their asses off. Oh the irony." haha....oh dear

Interesting perspective, I would never have thought that since I haven't seen The Prestige. But it just makes me think Nolan failed on another level if his top priority was to make a movie consistent with his Filmography, rather than being true to the source material itself.
