A couiple of issues:

1. I think you mean The Big Heat (1953) not the Big Sleep (1946) from Howard Hawks.

Peter Lorre's performance is creepy/outstanding and Lang's direction assured. Have you checked your local library--sometimes they have the best foreign film selection anywhere. Just a thought.
